LAGOS STATE GOVERNOR APPROVES 25% DISCOUNT ON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FARES.

Lagos State Governor, Bababjide Sanwo-Olu, has granted approval for a 25% discount on regulated bus and rail transportation fares throughout the state.

The implementation of this discount will commence on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

The decision to offer this discount was made in response to public concerns expressed on Monday after the cancellation of the 50% fare rebate for regulated bus, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), and rail transportation.

Commuters had been left stranded and disheartened by the perceived insensitivity of the state government, as they believed public transportation fares should have been a source of relief to the general public during challenging economic times.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) had earlier communicated its intention to return to the pre-August 2, 2023, fare rates starting on Monday, November 6, 2023.

In August, Governor Sanwo-Olu had announced a 50% reduction in public transport service prices, including BRT Standard routes, First and Last Mile, Rail, and Ferry, to mitigate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies.

However, the sudden removal of the subsidy had significant financial repercussions for average Nigerian households, prompting some states to introduce relief packages to alleviate the economic distress.
